About Twenty Twelve

Default themes are the closest thing WordPress has to a date stamp. Each release year brought a bundled theme, and a site still running one is usually a site that was set up in that era and never restyled since. Twenty Twelve shipped with WordPress in 2012 and remains active on 12,349 sites as of October 2026.

Presence carries a specific set of implications. A site on a bundled theme has not paid for a commercial theme and has not commissioned a custom one, which places it toward the small business, personal, institutional and legacy end of the WordPress population. The theme was built when responsive layout was still a differentiator, so its pages work on a phone but predate the block editor entirely, and a site running it has a front end resting on assumptions the current editor has left behind.

Detection needs a caveat here and it is not a small one. Themes are inherited, so a child theme keeps the parent templates and stylesheet and a site that looks nothing like the stock design can still report the parent underneath. Agencies selling redesigns, hosting companies selling managed upgrades and security vendors hunting for neglected installs all want that exact segment, and it is defined here by a theme rather than by anything a company would volunteer about itself.

Concentration sits in United States, with 3,800 sites there and .com carrying much of the domain mix, which reflects where the theme era of WordPress adoption was heaviest rather than any property of the code. A per domain lookup tells you that one site is dated.
