Los temas por defecto son lo más parecido a una marca de fecha que tiene WordPress. La presencia del tema trae consigo un conjunto concreto de implicaciones. WordPress.org publica el tema con licencia GPL v2, así que no hay compra que rastrear ni relación con un proveedor que aprovechar, y el valor está por completo en lo que representa la población, que es un conjunto amplio e identificable de sitios de WordPress que llevan mucho tiempo sin una renovación de diseño. Las agencias que venden rediseños, las empresas de alojamiento que venden actualizaciones gestionadas y los proveedores de seguridad que buscan instalaciones descuidadas quieren exactamente ese segmento, y aquí lo define un tema y no algo que una empresa fuera a contar por voluntad propia.
