A database is not something a website exposes on purpose, which makes MySQL an unusual entry in a technology index. Nothing in a page announces it. Anyone selling database tooling, backup services or performance work uses it to find the properties where the problem they solve actually exists.

Geographically United States accounts for 10,028,475 of the sites we associate with it, and the .com zone leads. Distributions of that kind track where volume hosting is concentrated rather than any regional preference for one engine over another.

Because we publish every detection on a domain together, the database signal becomes considerably sharper in combination than alone. The same engine underneath a content platform, an ecommerce platform or a custom application describes three completely different customers, and separating them requires the rest of the stack on the same row rather than a series of separate lookups.

There is also a negative query worth naming, because it is the one most often overlooked. Knowing which sites in a segment do not show this engine, and what they show instead, is how you size a competitive displacement rather than a renewal. That question is only expressible against a full population, since it depends on the absence of a value rather than its presence.

The engine itself dates to 1995, and being freely available and commercially stewarded at once is exactly why no authoritative deployment count exists anywhere: the people who could count it have no visibility into the copies nobody paid for, and the people running those copies never told anyone.
