Most WordPress themes are chosen for how they look. Hello Elementor is chosen for how little it does. The theme ships almost no opinions about typography, layout or colour, because its purpose is to get out of the way of the Elementor page builder that draws the actual page. Finding it on a domain is not a design signal at all. Finding it is a signal about the tool somebody used and, more usefully, about the kind of person who used it.

The kind of person is usually a freelancer or a small agency working to a fixed price. A builder plus a blank companion theme is the quickest reliable route from a client brief to a live brochure site, and it requires no code. As of September 2026 we see the theme on 2,044,903 sites, a population weighted toward small business, local services and marketing pages rather than applications. The dependency is the interesting part. A site running this theme is almost certainly running the builder as well, and the builder has a licensed tier, a plugin ecosystem, a template market and a distinctive performance profile. Presence places the domain inside that ecosystem with reasonable confidence, which is a stronger inference than a theme name usually supports. The theme itself has been distributed free under GPL v2 by Elementor Ltd. since 2018, so nothing about presence indicates spend. The layer above it is where money changes hands.

Version reporting on themes is honest but coarse. We read the version from the stylesheet header and from asset URLs, which means a site that strips version query strings for caching, or runs a child theme with a rewritten header, can report nothing or report something stale. The release we record most often is 3.4.9. Our tally of distinct version strings, 305, runs into the ceiling of what the export stores, so treat it as evidence of a long tail rather than as an exact inventory of releases in the wild.

The buyers of a list like this are clear about what they want. Plugin and template vendors selling into the builder market want the addressable population rather than a sample of it. Managed hosts want sites whose page weight and builder overhead make a performance pitch easy to write. Agencies want to find the sites their competitors built, because a builder-based site is unusually easy to take over and rebuild without touching custom code. Anyone selling design work can use the same list to find sites that were assembled quickly and have not been revisited since launch.

Checking one domain is a support question and a browser answers it. The download answers acquisition questions instead. How many sites in a given country and suffix run this builder stack, which of them also run a commerce plugin or a payment gateway, which hosting networks they cluster on, whether a single agency fingerprint repeats across a run of client domains, and how the whole population changed between two snapshots. Carry the detection caveats along, which are that stripped headers and aggressive caching hide a share of installs and that a child theme can mask the parent, and the list remains a fair map of a market that is otherwise invisible from outside.
