About CentOS
CentOS (Community ENTerprise Operating System) is a free, open-source Linux distribution derived from the sources of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Originally maintained by the CentOS Project and later sponsored by Red Hat, it provided a stable, enterprise-grade OS at no cost, making it a popular choice for web servers and infrastructure.
CentOS was widely adopted by hosting providers, web applications, and enterprise environments as a production-ready server platform. In 2021, Red Hat shifted the project to CentOS Stream, a rolling-release distribution that tracks ahead of RHEL rather than mirroring it. Many former CentOS users have since migrated to alternatives like AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux.
