Nginx (pronounced 'engine-x') is a high-performance open-source web server, reverse proxy, load balancer, and HTTP cache originally created by Igor Sysoev and first released in 2004. Designed to handle high concurrency with low memory usage, Nginx uses an asynchronous, event-driven architecture that outperforms traditional thread-based servers under heavy load.
Nginx has grown to become one of the most widely deployed web servers on the internet, powering millions of websites ranging from small personal blogs to large-scale enterprise applications. It is commonly used as a reverse proxy in front of application servers, for SSL/TLS termination, and as a static file server. Nginx Inc., the commercial entity behind the project, was acquired by F5 Networks in 2019, which now offers Nginx Plus with enterprise support and additional features.
