About Astra

A theme is one of the few parts of a WordPress site that somebody usually pays for, and Astra is built around that fact. The free edition is given away through the theme directory and a paid edition sells the parts professionals reach for, which are the starter template library, the header and footer builder and the commerce layout controls. Child themes, optimisation plugins that inline and rename assets, and full-page caches that strip generator markup can each hide an install or report a parent that no longer matches reality. The count is best treated as a confident floor with a soft edge rather than as an exact census of the theme in the wild.

Distributed under GPL v2 by Brainstorm Force since 2017, the theme is free to obtain, which is precisely why the list has commercial value rather than none. Plugin vendors want the sites their add-ons can be sold into. Competing theme and builder companies want a migration target that has already demonstrated a willingness to install third-party code. Hosts want sites whose stack they know how to support and optimise. Agencies want to see how many sites their competitors have shipped on the same foundation, and how many of those sites have gone stale since delivery.

One domain can be checked in a browser in a moment, and that is the right tool when the domain is already known. The download answers the harder direction. Which sites combine this theme with a commerce plugin and a payment gateway, how the population distributes across countries and suffixes, which hosting networks concentrate it, whether a single builder's fingerprint repeats across a set of client domains, and how the release distribution shifted between two snapshots. Questions of that shape need the list rather than a lookup, because the difficult part is not confirming a domain you already suspect. The difficult part is producing the domains in the first place.
