Standard-Themes sind bei WordPress das, was einem Datumsstempel am nächsten kommt. Jedes Release-Jahr brachte ein mitgeliefertes Theme, und eine Website, die noch eines davon nutzt, wurde meist in jener Zeit eingerichtet und seitdem nie neu gestaltet. Der Einsatz dieses Themes lässt eine Reihe konkreter Schlüsse zu. Eine stark angepasste Installation kann außerdem die Merkmale verdecken, an denen wir die Erkennung festmachen. Das mitgelieferte Theme kommt mit WordPress, ob es nun jemand aktiviert oder nicht. Wir zählen zwar die Aktivierung und nicht die Dateien auf dem Server, doch Websites, die das Theme wechseln und wieder zurückwechseln oder nach einem fehlgeschlagenen Update auf ein Standard-Theme zurückfallen, tauchen zwischen zwei Crawls im Bestand auf und wieder ab.
Kommerziell ist eine solche Liste leicht einzuordnen. Das Projekt WordPress.org veröffentlicht das Theme unter der Lizenz GPL v2, es gibt also weder einen Kauf, den man nachverfolgen könnte, noch eine Anbieterbeziehung, an die sich anknüpfen ließe. Der Wert liegt ganz in dem, wofür der Bestand steht: eine große und klar identifizierbare Menge von WordPress-Websites, deren Design lange nicht erneuert wurde. Agenturen, die Redesigns verkaufen, Hosting-Unternehmen, die betreute Upgrades verkaufen, und Sicherheitsanbieter auf der Suche nach vernachlässigten Installationen wollen genau dieses Segment erreichen, und es wird hier durch ein Theme definiert und nicht durch etwas, das ein Unternehmen freiwillig über sich preisgeben würde.
