Delegated in 1996 and administered by the Antarctica Network Information Centre, .aq is available for registration by organizations physically located in or officially operating in Antarctica, including research stations, scientific expeditions, and governmental programs. Because Antarctica has no permanent civilian population and is governed collectively under the Antarctic Treaty System, the domain has a very small and specialized user base.
