As of September 2026 we detect this framework on 7,641,451 sites, and that population belongs firmly to the second.

The difference matters more than the count. Sites in this population skew toward larger organisations, internal and business-to-business applications, government and regulated industries. They change more slowly, they are less likely to be visible in consumer-facing rankings, and they almost never appear in the marketing datasets built by scraping popular site lists. That combination makes them systematically underrepresented everywhere except in a measurement that starts from the whole domain space rather than from a popularity list.

Version data is unusually informative here because the runtime reports itself with more precision than most. We see 159 distinct strings with 4.0.30319 the most common, and the spread maps closely onto organisational upgrade cycles rather than individual decisions. A framework generation that is several years past its support window, still running in production, is a procurement signal rather than a technical one.

United States accounts for 4,845,706 of detections and the .com zone leads, though on this population the country reading is closer to meaningful than usual, since organisations running this stack are more likely to host domestically for compliance reasons.

The commercial audience for this list is different from most of the index. It is enterprise sales, managed service providers, security vendors with a compliance angle, and consultancies selling modernisation. Deal sizes are larger, populations are smaller, and precision matters more than volume, which is exactly the situation where a full downloadable list beats a metered lookup.

One structural feature of this population deserves emphasis, because it changes how the data should be gathered rather than merely how it is read. Organisations running this stack frequently operate many domains: regional variants, acquired brands, internal tools and project-specific properties that share nothing visible except infrastructure. A row here is often one of several belonging to the same buyer.

Recognising that requires looking at what the domains have in common beyond the framework: shared analytics accounts, shared certificate patterns, shared hosting ranges and shared supporting technologies. Collapsing the population into organisations rather than domains changes the apparent market size substantially, usually downward in count and upward in value, and it is only possible with the whole population in hand.

Microsoft publishes the current generation as open source, recorded in our index as MIT, a change from how the platform began after 2002, and that shift is itself visible in the version distribution as older and newer generations coexist in the same population.
