Stimulus is a modest JavaScript framework created by Basecamp (now 37signals) for adding behavior to HTML. Rather than taking over the entire frontend, Stimulus connects JavaScript objects called controllers to existing HTML elements via data attributes. This approach keeps HTML as the source of truth and works seamlessly alongside server-rendered HTML.

Released in 2018 as part of the Hotwire family of tools, Stimulus is designed for teams that prefer server-side rendering over single-page application architectures. It is particularly popular in the Ruby on Rails community and pairs naturally with Turbo for fast, HTML-over-the-wire navigation. Stimulus has a minimal API surface and encourages progressive enhancement rather than replacing HTML with JavaScript-managed state.
