hreflang is an HTML link attribute used to tell search engines about the language and regional targeting of alternate versions of a web page. The attribute has existed in the HTML specification since HTML 4.0, but its now-common convention for international SEO, pairing rel="alternate" with an hreflang value, was introduced by Google in December 2011 to help multilingual and multi-regional sites serve the correct language version to searchers. It appears in page markup as link elements, in HTTP response headers, or in XML sitemaps, and it is detected on websites as a signal of international SEO configuration. Search engines such as Google and Yandex read it to match a page to a user's language and location.
