Varnish Cache is a high-performance, open-source HTTP accelerator designed to cache and serve web content at exceptional speed. Originally developed by Poul-Henning Kamp and released in 2006, Varnish sits in front of web servers as a reverse proxy, storing copies of responses in memory to dramatically reduce backend load and improve page load times.

Varnish is widely deployed by high-traffic websites, media companies, and CDN providers due to its exceptional throughput and low latency. Its powerful configuration language, VCL (Varnish Configuration Language), allows fine-grained control over caching rules, request routing, and content manipulation. Varnish Software offers commercial support and an enterprise edition with additional features. The open-source version is used by organizations including Wikipedia, The Guardian, and numerous large-scale news and e-commerce platforms.
