About cdnjs

Almost nobody chooses cdnjs. It arrives inside a theme, a template or a tutorial that somebody copied, and it stays because removing it would require understanding what depends on it. As of September 2026 we detect it on 6,621,551 sites, and the majority of those owners could not name it.

That inherited quality is precisely what makes it informative. A dependency nobody selected is a dependency nobody maintains, so its presence marks sites assembled from existing parts rather than built deliberately. Combined with the rest of the front-end stack, it helps separate properties that were constructed from properties that were configured.

There is a second reading with more weight to it. Loading libraries from a third-party origin is a supply chain decision, whether or not anyone recognised it as one at the time. Every site in this population is executing code served by an infrastructure it does not control, and the security implications of that are well documented. For anyone assessing third-party risk across a portfolio, this population is the starting list.

The origin here belongs to a major delivery network, which changes the risk calculation but does not remove the structural point. The dependency is external, it is version pinned in the page, and the site owner has no mechanism to notice if the pin becomes inappropriate.

United States accounts for 2,801,331 of detections and the .com zone leads, both tracking the age and origin of the templates that carried it rather than any regional preference.

The practical query is almost always about combination. Which sites load libraries from an external origin, and also carry payment tooling, and also sit in a regulated sector, and also show no evidence of recent maintenance. That is a supply chain risk shortlist, and it is four filters over a full population rather than any single lookup.

A page requesting a specific release from an external origin will keep requesting it indefinitely, long after that release has known problems. That produces a measurable population of sites executing outdated third-party code with no upgrade path that anyone is responsible for. For security vendors, auditors and insurers, the size and composition of that population is a genuinely useful number, and it is not something the delivery network could publish even if it wanted to, because the network sees requests rather than the sites behind them.

Cloudflare operates the service and it is published under the MIT license, available since 2011. Free public infrastructure of this kind never produces a user list, because there is no account and no registration between the site and the service.
