Cloudflare is an American connectivity-cloud company, founded in 2009, that sits in front of a website as a reverse proxy: visitor traffic is routed through Cloudflare's edge network — spanning data centres in more than 300 cities worldwide — before it reaches the origin server. From that vantage point Cloudflare delivers a content delivery network (CDN) with edge caching, authoritative DNS, DDoS mitigation, a web application firewall (WAF), TLS termination and bot management. Its widely adopted free tier, one-click activation through a domain's nameservers, and signature response headers (such as the server: cloudflare and cf-ray fields) have made it one of the most prevalent pieces of infrastructure on the public web, which is precisely why identifying the websites using Cloudflare at scale is a non-trivial detection problem rather than a simple lookup.
webatla maintains a continuously refreshed index of websites that use Cloudflare, built entirely from live signals — DNS records, HTTP response headers and IP/ASN fingerprints tied to Cloudflare's address space — rather than self-reported tags, so a domain is only listed while the evidence is current. Because the edge proxy masks a site's true origin, this is a meaningful detection task in its own right, and the index is re-derived as domains move onto or off the network.
