We assign hosting from network-level and DNS evidence, which is reliable for sites served directly and degrades as soon as a site sits behind a content delivery network or reverse proxy that terminates the connection elsewhere. Dense multi-tenant address space blurs the edges further. The total should be read as domains we can attribute with confidence rather than as a customer count, and customers who run their own edge infrastructure are the ones most likely to be under-reported.

The commercial reading is straightforward once the caveat is accepted. A hosting footprint is a book of contracts, each with a renewal date attached, and rival providers sell against it, resellers recruit from it, and monitoring, backup and security vendors qualify against it. Researchers use the same footprint differently, as a measure of how much of a national web sits inside domestic infrastructure.
