About Algolia

Search is the point where a website stops being a set of pages and starts being a catalogue. Algolia exists because running a fast, typo tolerant index in house is harder than it looks, and the sites that adopt hosted search have usually reached the size where their own database queries stopped being good enough.

Algolia has run the service as a hosted platform since 2012 under a Proprietary licence, and the integration is a JavaScript client talking to a remote index rather than a module bundled with a CMS. Presence therefore carries an architectural fact that most front end detections do not. Somebody chose to move a core function off their own infrastructure, although a free entry plan and a free programme for open source documentation mean a detection on its own is not proof of a paying account.

Detection sees the browser side of that arrangement. We match the client library and the request patterns a page makes, which finds implementations where the visitor's browser queries the index and misses backend integrations where the server does the querying and returns plain HTML. Server side implementations are common on larger properties, so the visible population skews toward front end search experiences and away from the quietest, most engineered deployments. The count is a floor.

As of September 2026 we detect Algolia on 13,311 sites, and the list reads usefully in two directions. For vendors selling search, merchandising, recommendation or product analytics, a site with hosted search already installed has proven appetite, and the same list maps out which accounts a competitor holds and which are still unclaimed. For everyone else the interesting question is what these sites have in common, which is a catalogue worth indexing, so the population works as a directory of ecommerce stores, marketplaces, documentation sites and publishers large enough to outgrow built in search.

A lookup on one domain answers a support question. A downloadable list answers a market question, and the difference is the fields around the name. Country and top level domain turn the population into territories a sales team can be assigned to. The technologies detected alongside show which commerce platforms and frameworks the audience actually runs on, which is what tells a vendor whether to build an integration or a plugin. Watching the same list over successive releases shows the direction of travel, since sites appearing and disappearing from a hosted service is the closest thing the public web offers to churn data.
