Most analytics tags tell you that a site counts its traffic. Hotjar tells you that somebody is watching sessions. The product records heatmaps, session replays, on page surveys and feedback widgets, which is a different job from measuring visits, and a team installs it when the question has moved from how many people arrived to why they left without buying.

The distinction is worth holding onto, because it implies staffing. Heatmaps and replays produce work rather than dashboards, and the work only gets done where a product manager, a designer or a conversion owner exists to do it. A site carrying the tag usually has a budget line for optimisation and a named person attached to it, which is a far stronger qualifier than traffic volume on its own.

As of September 2026 the tag appears on 320,414 sites, 200,647 of them served from United States, with .com well represented across the suffix mix. Behaviour analytics spreads through agencies and in house growth teams rather than through hosting defaults or platform bundles, so the footprint tracks the commercial web instead of any particular CMS. There is no version axis to segment on here, since the tag is a hosted script that updates on the vendor's side and never announces a build to the page.

For a researcher the file answers questions about maturity rather than about reach. Filtering to the population of sites running session replay yields a list of organisations that have already decided user research is worth paying for, which is the qualified end of the market for anything sold to product, conversion or design teams. For privacy researchers the same population sizes the deployment of replay technology, which sits in a sensitive place under consent law because it captures interaction rather than page views.

The undercount here is structural and you should plan around it. Behaviour tags are commonly loaded through a tag manager or held back by a consent banner until a visitor opts in, and a crawler opts in to nothing. Sites that gate the script behind consent do not show the fingerprint at all, so the file leans toward sites that load it unconditionally and the real installed base is larger than the count.
