About Ionicons

An icon set says less about the people who built a site than almost any other dependency we can detect, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Icons get chosen in an afternoon, they survive redesigns because nobody wants to redraw them, and they carry no data, no configuration, and no business logic. Anyone hoping a single detection will reveal how a site was engineered should look at a different column.

What Ionicons does carry is provenance. The library came out of the Ionic framework ecosystem and remains the default icon set for it, so its presence correlates with hybrid mobile tooling and with front ends assembled from that ecosystem's conventions. Correlation is the right word. The library is MIT licensed and freely usable in any project, distributed as a web component that embeds through a plain tag with no build step, so plenty of sites carry it having never touched the framework it came from. Our record for the library starts in 2014 and it is plain JavaScript in the page, which is why detection is reliable even though interpretation is not.

The honest use of a weak signal is as one column among many. In aggregate, and joined against framework, CMS, and hosting columns, an icon set helps cluster sites by how they were assembled rather than identify them individually. A developer tool vendor sizing an audience, an agency looking for sites built on a particular front end stack, or a researcher tracking how component libraries spread across the web all get real value from the grouping even though no single row proves much. That is the difference between a lookup and a list. Checking one domain tells you it loads the icon set. Holding the whole population lets you ask which stacks it travels with.

As of September 2026 we detect the library on 399,667 sites, with 138,268 of them in United States and .com common among the suffixes.

No version is reported, and the reason is worth stating rather than hiding. Sites load the library from a content delivery path or bundle it into their own assets, and neither route reliably exposes a release identifier to an outside observer, so this list cannot be used to scope a version specific issue. Detection also depends on the library being recognisable in the delivered page, which means sites that self host a renamed copy or inline the icons as raw markup fall outside the count. Neither gap is unusual for a front end asset, but both mean the population here describes visible usage of a specific distribution rather than every project that ever adopted the icons.
