About wpBakery

Very little of the software on a small business website is a deliberate purchase, and wpBakery is a good illustration of why. The builder is licensed by WPBakery to theme authors, who bundle it inside the commercial templates sold on theme marketplaces, so the person who bought the template frequently never evaluated the builder itself. Adoption spread sideways through that resale economy rather than through direct choice, which is why the footprint is both wide and shallow. A site can carry the markup for years without anyone on the owner's side knowing the name of the tool that renders their pages.

The distinction matters as soon as you try to read the footprint as a commercial signal. A Page builders layer that arrives attached to a paid theme identifies a site built to a budget, usually by a freelancer or a small studio, usually on a deadline, and usually left untouched afterwards. Under a Proprietary model the entitlement travels with the theme, so the money went to the theme vendor and the ongoing relationship, where one exists, belongs to whoever assembled the site rather than to the builder's maker. Anyone selling maintenance, migration, hosting or performance work is looking at a population that routinely outlives its original builder.

Detection rests entirely on what the builder leaves behind in the delivered page. Distinctive shortcode wrappers, generated class names and dedicated stylesheets survive into the public HTML on a normal install, and all three are specific enough that a false positive is hard to construct. The evidence is not indestructible, though. Aggressive caching layers, custom asset pipelines and shortcode cleanup can flatten a page until it looks like plain WordPress output, so the figure should be read as sites where the builder was visible in the page we fetched, not as a count of licences ever issued. The error runs toward undercounting.

The country we see most often is United States at 448,105, and the suffix we record most often is .com, which is roughly what a marketplace-driven distribution looks like after running since 2011. Concentration in a single country reflects two things at once, where the theme marketplaces sell hardest and where our own coverage is deepest, and no single column separates those two effects for you. Anyone building a market estimate from the geography should treat it as a floor with a known bias rather than a share.

A per-domain lookup answers a question you already had, which is whether one named site runs this builder. The downloadable list answers the question that cannot be phrased as a lookup at all, because it runs in the other direction and starts from the technology to return the sites. Filter by country, by suffix, or by what else is installed alongside, and the output is a working target list for a migration offer, a competitive displacement campaign, or a security inventory of pages assembled out of vendor shortcodes. A researcher studying how the theme resale market shaped the ordinary web gets the same file for a different reason. In both cases the value sits in the sites you would never have thought to check, which is precisely what a lookup tool cannot give you.
