An analytics tag is the easiest thing in the world to add and the easiest thing to forget. CNZZ went onto an enormous number of pages during the years when a Chinese language site needed traffic statistics and the international options did not fit, and a great many of those tags are still sitting in the footer, still firing, long after anyone last opened a report.

The service dates from 2005, was later folded into the analytics arm of Alibaba Group, and kept the original snippet working through the transition, which is why the marker survives so well. A tracking script is not load bearing. Nothing breaks when the dashboard behind it goes unread, so removal tends to happen only during a rebuild. The practical consequence is that the Analytics tag indicates when a site was built, and who built it, better than it indicates what anyone is currently measuring.

As of September 2026 we find the script on 216,139 sites, with 125,756 of them attributed to United States and .com on the largest block of domains. A distribution of that shape needs reading carefully rather than at face value. The tag belongs to a Chinese platform, but the sites carrying it are frequently registered through international registrars, hosted outside the country and written for buyers abroad, which is exactly the profile of export trade, wholesale and manufacturing sites. Country attribution follows the domain and its hosting, so a page aimed at an overseas audience by a Chinese company lands in the country where that business chose to present itself.

The commercial reading follows from there. A list of sites carrying the tag is close to a list of businesses with Chinese development or marketing lineage operating on generic domains, and that is hard to assemble any other way, because language detection misses English language export sites and registrar records do not reveal who wrote the markup. Trade researchers, marketplace and payment vendors, brand protection teams and analytics competitors all want the same population for different reasons. A single domain lookup answers a compliance style question about one supplier. The dataset answers the market shaped questions, meaning how large the cohort is, which sectors and extensions it clusters in, whether it is shrinking, and which payment, chat and shipping tools these sites run alongside the tag.

The limits are worth stating plainly. Presence of the JavaScript snippet proves the tag is on the page, not that the account behind it is active, not that data still reaches a dashboard, and not that the owner knows the tag is there at all. Consent tools and tag managers can also load the script conditionally, so a scan that fetches a page without accepting cookies will miss installations a real visitor would trigger. Treat the count as the population of pages still carrying the marker, which is the useful question for research, rather than as a measure of the service's live user base.
