A page carrying this tag is telling you its business model out loud. Content is the product being given away, attention is the thing being sold, and the site owner has accepted an arrangement in which Google auctions the space and keeps a cut. Very few technical signals map that directly onto a commercial posture, which is what makes Google AdSense one of the more interpretable rows in a technology dataset. Nothing about the code matters much. What matters is the intent behind installing it.

Publisher intent is a useful filter in both directions. Agencies buying media, competitors mapping a content vertical, brand safety teams checking where inventory appears, and companies selling anything to publishers all need a list of sites that monetise through advertising rather than through subscriptions, commerce or lead generation. A serving network with a Proprietary model and an approval process behind it also carries a weak quality implication, since publishers accepted into the programme have at minimum been reviewed against a policy, which is more than can be said for the open web as a whole.

The footprint is very wide. As of September 2026 we detect the tag on 1,250,989 sites, a total built up since 2003, when the programme turned contextual advertising into something an individual writer could switch on in an afternoon. Broad availability is exactly the point of the product, so the population runs from personal blogs and hobby forums through niche publications to large media operations, and any analysis that treats those as one segment will produce mush. Filtering by traffic proxies, by content management platform, by country or by what else the site runs is what turns the raw population into something usable.

Geographic distribution shows the same shape as the advertising market itself. The country we record most often is United States at 593,584, and .com is the suffix we see most often, which reflects where advertiser spend concentrates and where publishers therefore see the best returns rather than any restriction on who may participate.

Two honest limits belong on the same page as the number. First, the tag is evidence of installation, not of an active, approved and paying account. A snippet left in a template after an account lapsed, or a site awaiting review, looks the same from the outside as a site earning every day. Second, delivery has moved increasingly through tag managers, consent platforms and lazily loaded scripts, so a page can run the network without exposing the recognisable call during a plain crawl. Both effects push the same way, meaning the count is a floor for participation and not a measure of revenue.

Given the caveats, the value of the exported list is that it inverts the question. Checking one domain confirms a guess about a site you had already found, which is rarely the hard part. Starting from the advertising network and receiving the whole population lets you assemble the segment you actually want, publishers in a market, publishers on a particular platform, publishers running a competing network alongside this one, publishers who appeared in the last crawl and were not there before. Those are the questions media buyers, ad technology vendors and researchers actually ask, and a lookup box cannot express any of them.
