An owner can end up with a font loader, a slider and a handful of tracking tags without ever asking for any of them, because a theme or an agency brought them along. A search optimisation plugin arrives another way. Installing one is a deliberate act with a commercial motive behind it, which makes Yoast SEO a strong intent signal available at scale.

As of September 2026 we detect it on 7,134,983 sites. Every one of those installations represents an owner who, at some point, cared enough about search traffic to act on it. That is a meaningfully different population from every site on the same underlying platform, and it is a considerably better qualified one for anyone selling marketing services.

The signal gets sharper when you look at what surrounds it. A site running an optimisation plugin but no analytics is one where somebody started and stopped. A site running both, plus a tag manager and a form tool, is being actively worked. A site running the plugin at a release from several years ago is one where the intent existed once and the attention has since moved elsewhere. Those three states describe three different sales conversations, and they are separable only if you can see the whole stack together.

We currently see 709 distinct version strings with 28.3 the most common. Because this plugin updates frequently and prompts loudly, version lag is an unusually direct measure of whether anyone is still logging in. It takes deliberate inattention to fall far behind.

For agencies and marketing tool vendors this is close to an ideal prospecting population, because it self-selects for budget and intent simultaneously. The qualifying filters that matter are all intersections: plugin present, analytics present, version stale, geography matching, commercial TLD. Each is cheap against a local file and expensive against anything metered.

There is a caveat about what this signal does not tell you. Optimisation plugins are frequently installed by whoever built the site rather than by the owner, sometimes as a default included in a starter configuration. Presence therefore indicates that somebody in the chain thought about search, which is not always the person you would be selling to.

The way to separate those cases is configuration rather than presence. A plugin left entirely at its defaults looks different from one that has been actively used, and several of those differences are visible in the output it produces on the page. Combined with whether the site also runs analytics, a tag manager or structured data, the distinction between installed and used becomes reasonably reliable, and it is the difference between a list and a qualified list.

Yoast BV publishes it under the GPL v3 license and the product has been available since 2008. Distribution through a plugin directory means the vendor sees installs but not the commercial context around them, which is the part this dataset adds.
