Sass (Syntactically Awesome Style Sheets) is a CSS preprocessor that extends the CSS language with features such as variables, nesting, mixins, functions, and inheritance. Originally designed by Hampton Catlin and developed by Natalie Weizenbaum and Chris Eppstein, Sass compiles to standard CSS and is one of the most widely used CSS preprocessors in web development.

Sass is available in two syntaxes: the original indented syntax (.sass) and the more popular SCSS syntax (.scss), which is a superset of CSS. It integrates with virtually every modern frontend build toolchain and is commonly used alongside frameworks like Bootstrap and Tailwind CSS. Sass's presence indicates a project using a more structured and maintainable approach to stylesheet authoring.
