A content delivery network is the one part of a website that is supposed to leave no impression on the visitor at all. Pages arrive faster, and nothing on the screen says why. So when Fastly shows up in a scan, the finding is not about design, marketing or content management. The finding is about who is making the infrastructure decisions, and that is a different kind of company from the one that picks a theme.

Edge delivery under a Commercial arrangement is bought by teams that already know their traffic is worth optimising. Somebody measured latency, somebody costed origin bandwidth, somebody decided that logic belonged at the edge rather than in the application. Fastly Inc. built its CDN around programmability, configuration that behaves like code and cache invalidation fast enough to put dynamic pages behind it, so the platform tends to land where publishing, media, retail and software delivery meet real load. Presence is therefore a rough seniority marker for the engineering organisation behind a domain, and a useful qualifier for anyone selling observability, security, developer tooling or anything else priced against traffic.

The scale is genuinely large. As of September 2026 the platform is detected on 1,294,489 sites, which for a service that only became available in 2011 says something about how quickly edge delivery moved from exotic to routine. Growth of that shape usually means the technology stopped being a project and became a default, chosen once and inherited by every site the team ships afterwards.

The geography needs a caveat rather than a headline. Our country field describes the site, from registration and hosting signals, and not the point of delivery, which is the entire purpose of an edge network. So a figure like 1,245,741 sites in United States, alongside .com as the suffix we record most often, is telling you where this customer base is headquartered and incorporated, not where the bytes are served. Anyone reading it as a traffic map will draw the wrong conclusion. The commercial reading, where the buying decisions sit, is the sound one.

Detection has its own limits, and they cut both ways. Attribution comes from response headers, hostname evidence and the way the edge answers, all of which are reliable when they are present and absent when a customer sits the network behind another proxy, strips headers deliberately, or uses the platform only for an API subdomain or an asset host that never appears in a normal page fetch. A site can be a substantial customer and still look untouched from the outside. Once again the total is a floor, and the sites that are hardest to see tend to be the ones with the most engineering behind them.

Which is exactly why the exported list is worth more than a per-domain check. Checking a single domain tells you what one company already knows about itself. The list runs the other way, starting with the platform and returning the population, so it answers questions that have no lookup form. Who moved to this network in the last crawl cycle. Which sites run it alongside a particular framework, analytics vendor or commerce stack. Which segment of a market has adopted edge delivery and which has not. Those are portfolio questions, and portfolio questions need the file rather than a search box.
