About PayPal

A payment mark is a promise to a stranger. Everything else on a page can be provisional, but the moment a site asks somebody to enter a card it has to borrow trust from a brand the visitor already recognises, and the choice of which brand to borrow from is one of the few commercial decisions visible from outside the business.

PayPal is that borrowed trust for a very large part of the small end of the web. Operated by PayPal Holdings since 1998 and licensed as Proprietary, it lets a seller take cross-border payments without negotiating an acquiring relationship, which is why it shows up under Payment processors on donation pages, membership sites, one-product shops and invoicing flows as often as on conventional storefronts. Detecting it says the site intends to take money from people it has never met. Detecting it alongside a full commerce platform says something different, namely that the merchant offers it as one option among several.

As of September 2026 we detect the brand on 2,909,884 sites, and 1,653,178 of those resolve to Canada. A single market accounting for a share that large of a globally available payment brand should be read as a statement about our resolution method at least as much as about the sellers themselves. Country is derived from where a domain answers and from registration signals, both of which follow hosting and registrar decisions rather than the location of the person packing the parcels. Anyone using geography from this dataset for market sizing needs to hold that caveat in view, and .com being the common suffix reinforces the same point, since a generic suffix carries no national information at all.

Detection limits compound in the same direction. Payment integrations are frequently invisible from the delivered page. Checkout can live behind a redirect to a hosted page, inside a framed widget, or entirely on the server where no public fetch will ever see it. Buttons appear only after items reach a basket, which an automated visit does not fill. The consequence is a floor rather than a census, and the missing sellers skew toward the larger and more custom integrations. A detection also tells us the mark is present, not that the account is active, in good standing or currently taking payments.

With that framing in place, the population is genuinely informative. Competing payment providers get a displacement list segmented by market and by the commerce software running underneath. Risk and fraud teams get the long tail of sellers who accept money without any of the other infrastructure a real business accumulates. Ecommerce vendors get a qualified base of sites that already sell, which is a far better starting point than sites that merely could. Researchers studying informal and cross-border commerce get something otherwise very hard to assemble, which is a broad sample of small sellers who never appear in any commercial register.

None of those readers is served by a per-domain lookup. Checking one site tells you how one competitor takes money, and it tells you nothing about how many sellers like it exist, where they cluster, what they run alongside it and how the mix differs between one suffix and another. A downloadable list answers the population question directly, with the domain, the resolved country, the suffix and the rest of the detected stack on the same row, so the caveats above can be applied by the person doing the analysis rather than buried by whoever assembled the file.
