About Netlify

Almost everything else on a technology page is free to install. Hosting is the line on the invoice. When we record Netlify against a domain we are recording a commercial relationship somebody renews on a cycle, and that changes what the detection is good for. A library tells you what a page loads. A hosting platform tells you who the site is a customer of, and customers can be won, lost and counted.

The decision is also made by a recognizable kind of person. Sites here are connected to a code repository and republished automatically when someone pushes, which means the choice was made by a developer at the moment a project was wired up rather than by a purchasing process. Presence therefore qualifies a company as one that ships from version control, builds with a static generator or a JavaScript framework, and treats the website as software. The same signal disqualifies it as a target for anyone selling to a marketing department that expects a page editor and a phone number.

Interpretation needs one honest correction. The platform is operated by Netlify Inc. on a Freemium model, and a large share of the domains we detect sit on free tiers: personal projects, documentation, portfolio pages, staging environments that happen to have a custom domain attached. A count of sites is not a count of paying accounts, and public markup contains nothing that separates the two. Anyone sizing revenue from this list is sizing the wrong thing, while anyone sizing developer reach is sizing exactly the right one.

As of September 2026 we identify Netlify on 1,472,447 sites. United States accounts for 725,372 of them and the suffix mix leans toward .com. The country column reflects where a domain is registered and where the organization behind it appears to sit, not where the page is served from, because the platform delivers from an edge network with no single location. Reading edge geography out of this column would be a mistake.

Identification comes from response headers, from the targets a domain points at in its records, and from artifacts the platform leaves in delivered pages. All of those can be hidden. Put another content delivery network in front of the origin and the platform disappears from view, which biases the count against exactly the larger and more customized deployments a competitor would most want to see. Parked domains and abandoned projects push in the other direction. The number is a working floor with a known skew rather than a register.

Since 2015 this category has been reshuffled repeatedly, and the practical questions are all comparative. Which domains moved between platforms since the last snapshot. Which frameworks concentrate on which host. How large the population is in one country, in one sector, at one domain suffix, before a sales team commits to a campaign against it. A per-domain lookup answers whether a prospect you already named is a customer of the platform. The downloadable file gives you the prospects you had not named, which is the only version of the question that produces a pipeline.
