About Pure CSS

Pure CSS is filed under UI frameworks, but everything it delivers to a browser is CSS. A page loads a stylesheet, applies class names for grids, forms, buttons, tables and menus, and the framework has finished its work before a single script runs. Detection follows from those artefacts: the file name, the paths sites serve it from, and the distinctive class prefixes left behind in the markup. Where a developer has renamed the file or folded two modules into a larger build, the fingerprint thins and the site drops out of our count, so the figure is better read as a floor than as a census.

Yahoo published the framework in 2013 under a BSD licence and the project has been quiet for a long stretch since, which matters more for interpretation than it first sounds. We hold no version string for it at all, so a copy fetched last week and one that has sat untouched on a server for years look identical from outside. Anyone using the list to judge how current a site is will need that signal from somewhere else, from response headers, from the content management system beside it, or from the copyright line in the footer.

As of September 2026 we detect the framework on 27,655 sites, and the shape of those sites is consistent enough to be useful on its own. A few kilobytes of stylesheet with no build step and no component library attached is the choice of someone assembling pages by hand, or of a developer who wanted layout structure without inheriting an entire design system. Documentation portals, internal tools, small business landing pages and the marketing sites of engineering-led companies all recur. Large commerce properties are the exception, since they tend toward heavier frameworks that arrive with their own JavaScript.

Geography adds a second filter. United States accounts for 12,180 of the sites we see, and the domain mix leans to .com, which is what adoption through developer channels rather than through a marketplace or a hosting bundle tends to produce. Nobody preinstalls this framework for a customer. Someone read the documentation and made a decision, and the country and suffix distribution still carries the shape of that.

A per-domain lookup answers whether one site uses the framework. The downloadable list answers the questions that only exist in aggregate: which agencies build with it, whether adoption is holding or bleeding away to utility-class alternatives, which analytics tags and hosting providers keep appearing beside it, and how to reach an entire segment at once instead of one domain at a time.
