The share buttons stopped working and the script stayed. Oracle acquired the sharing widget and later shut it down, so the endpoints that once served share counts and rendered buttons no longer do useful work. Finding the script in a page today is mostly a statement about the page rather than about the tool.

As of September 2026 the markup still sits on 120,403 sites, 56,086 of them in United States, with the domain mix leaning toward .com. Sites in that population are still asking a browser to fetch and run a third-party script that nobody maintains. A dead embed is a dependable indicator of a template that has not been opened since the shutdown, and a template nobody opens usually belongs to a site nobody edits.

There are three audiences for a list like that. The first is anyone selling redesigns, maintenance or modern engagement tooling, because a dead sharing widget is a cheap proxy for a stale site whose owner may not know it is stale. The second is security and procurement, since an abandoned third-party script is a supply-chain liability: the browser is still being told to execute code from a domain the site owner does not control and the original vendor no longer has a reason to defend. The third reading is commercial in the other direction. Publishers who relied on the widget needed a replacement when it closed, and the ones still carrying the old loader are by definition the ones who never chose it, which makes them a defined prospect pool for anyone selling sharing, related-content or engagement tools now.

The history explains the scale of the residue. Launched in 2006 and given away free, the JavaScript widget spread through publisher templates for years and quietly assembled a broad third-party audience network on the back of buttons that cost nothing to install. Oracle bought the business, ran it under a Proprietary model, and eventually closed it, leaving the installed base behind on pages that were never revisited.

Detection here means the script reference is present in the served page, not that anything renders for a visitor. Some sites removed the visible buttons but left the loader in a shared header, and others sit behind caches that will keep serving an old template for as long as nothing forces a rebuild, so the count measures neglect at the markup level and nothing more. A per-domain check tells you one site is carrying dead weight. The downloadable list tells you how many sites are, which ones they are, and what else they run, which is the only form of the question worth asking if you intend to do something about it.
