About ZURB Foundation

ZURB Foundation came out of an agency rather than a platform vendor. ZURB, a product design studio, built the framework for its own client work and released it in 2011 under MIT, and the priorities show in the design: a semantic grid, restrained defaults, and a preference for letting a designer keep control of the markup instead of scattering utility classes through it. Foundation for Sites covered web projects and Foundation for Emails took on the harder problem of responsive HTML email.

Our catalogue files the framework under UI frameworks, which is a simplification worth flagging. Much of what Foundation contributes to a page is CSS, the grid and the component styles, and the JavaScript half is optional. Detection therefore leans on stylesheet and class name patterns as much as on any script, and a build that renames classes or extracts only the grid can slip past the fingerprint, so the published count describes sites that ship recognisable Foundation rather than everyone who ever started from it.

As of September 2026 we see the framework on 496,531 sites. A Foundation detection carries a different implication from a page builder detection. Nobody arrives at Foundation by clicking a template in a hosting dashboard, because using it means running a build step, writing markup and choosing components, so a site in this list was assembled by somebody who writes code, whether an in house developer, a freelancer or an agency. For anyone selling developer tools, recruiting, or professional services, that filter is the whole point of the list.

United States holds 235,569 of the footprint and .com leads the domain mix, which follows the framework's origin in a Californian studio and its early adoption inside the American agency market. European and Latin American adoption exists in quantity too, and the pattern worth watching is less the country split than the pairing of Foundation with the system underneath it, since a Foundation front end sitting on WordPress describes a very different buyer from a Foundation front end on a Rails or Django application.

The framework's story since then is one of slow decline against Bootstrap and, later, against utility first CSS, and ZURB handed maintenance to the community rather than driving it, so a large part of the current footprint is sites that were built well once and have not been touched since. We do not track release identifiers here, so the dataset cannot separate a current build from an ancient one, which is a real limit for security or migration work. What the download does answer is the population question a domain lookup cannot reach: how many sites still carry Foundation, which markets they sit in, what content management and analytics travel with them, and how quickly the set is shrinking between exports.
