Про Nginx

Nginx існує через вузьке місце, яке відтоді перестало бути цікавим. Найцікавіша структура лежить нижче. На цих сайтах ми зараз бачимо в продакшені стільки різних рядків версій: 347, а найпоширенішим із них є 1.28.3. Широкий розкид версій це нормальний стан для програм, які люди встановлюють самі і потім перестають про них думати, бо в операційному циклі ніщо не змушує оновлюватися, доки щось не зламається. Вебсервер, який працює, не оголошує, що відстає на три роки.

Наслідки виходять за межі охайності. Кожна опублікована порада з безпеки стосується діапазону версій, і сукупність сайтів усередині того діапазону на такому масштабі не є похибкою округлення. Тим, хто займається дослідженням вразливостей, страховим андеррайтингом чи оцінкою ланцюга постачання, потрібен розподіл, а не мода, бо ризик живе у хвості, а саме на хвості публічні зведення припиняють звітувати.

Географія додає другу вісь. Найбільша концентрація сидить у США, і ось на скількох сайтах ми її там виявляємо: 7 081 331. Зона .com несе більше цієї програми, ніж будь-яка інша. Концентрація хостингу не є твердженням про частку ринку. Цифри такого штибу відображають, де щільна хостингова потужність, і знати це корисно саме тому, що вона не збігається з тим, де перебувають бізнеси за тими сайтами.

Причина хотіти список, а не діаграму, стає очевидною, щойно ви пробуєте відповісти на справжнє питання. Які сайти в одній країні працюють на версії нижче заданого порогу. Хто з них також запускає певний прикладний шар зверху. Які з'явилися від попередньої перебудови, а раніше їх не було. Ніщо з цього не є пошуком. Це фільтр над сукупністю, і йому потрібна сукупність.

Запит ви виконуєте на власній машині, з будь-якою потужністю, без обмеження частоти між вами і відповіддю.

Є ще одна складка, яка проявляється лише тоді, коли ви тримаєте всю сукупність. Рядок версії повідомляється самим сервером, і помітна частка розгортань свідомо приховує або переписує його як захід захисту. Отже спостережуваний розподіл зміщений у бік менш ретельно адміністрованої частини господарства, і про це варто сказати прямо, а не тихо вносити поправку. Сайти, які ховають свою версію, у середньому і є тими, за яких ви хвилювалися найменше.

Та сама сукупність також дозволяє ставити питання про сусідство, а не про програми. Оскільки експорт несе всі виявлення на домені разом, можна запитати, які сайти ставлять перед одним прикладним стеком цей сервер, а перед іншим інший, або які комбінації трапляються майже виключно всередині діапазонів одного хостинг-провайдера. Такі закономірності невидимі в будь-якому огляді однієї технології і очевидні в повній таблиці.
