About YUI
YUI is not a technology anyone is choosing today. Yahoo released the library as open source in 2006, stopped developing it long ago, and the wider JavaScript world moved on to package registries, bundlers and framework driven rendering. Every page still serving the library is a page that has not been rebuilt since that shift, or one that inherited the code from something older than the site around it.
Detection of an abandoned library is a proxy for maintenance rather than for preference. A site loading YUI is usually running a theme, an intranet portal, an admin console or a vendor widget written when the library was current and left alone since. The BSD terms it was published under let copies of the source sit unchanged inside other products for a very long time, and the JavaScript files often travel bundled inside a template rather than added by whoever runs the site today. Nobody renews a subscription for it, so nothing prompts a review.
The count is softer than a fingerprint on an actively maintained library. We match file names, global objects and script paths the library exposes, which catches conventional installations and misses concatenated or renamed builds. Sites that copied a few utilities out of the library without shipping its loader will not appear at all. Read the number as evidence of a visible remainder, not as a census of every line of that code still running.
As of October 2026 we detect YUI on 2,356 sites, which is a smaller population than the library once had and a more interesting one. Security researchers use lists like this to size the exposure created by code that no longer receives patches, since an unmaintained dependency does not announce its own vulnerabilities. Modernisation and migration vendors use it to find owners who are demonstrably behind, which is a far better qualifier than company size. Analysts use it as a decay curve, because a retired library leaves the web slowly and unevenly rather than all at once, and the leaving tells you something about which regions and which industries refresh their sites least often. A per domain lookup tells you one site is stuck in the past. The downloadable list tells you who else is stuck there, on which platforms, in which countries, and how quickly the remainder is shrinking.
