The hardest part of reporting on Lightbox is that the word names both a specific script and a pattern reimplemented independently many times over. When a photograph opens in an overlay above a dimmed page instead of loading a fresh URL, that is the pattern. The record refers to the family of scripts descended from the original implementation, not to every overlay on the web, and a reader who forgets the distinction will overestimate what the count covers.

Published in 2005 under the MIT license, the script predates nearly every framework a working front-end developer has used. The original arrived when a photo gallery meant a page of thumbnails and a separate page for each image, and it removed the reload. Since then the pattern has been absorbed into themes, plugins, and page builders, so a site carrying it today has usually not chosen it in any deliberate sense. Whoever built the theme chose it, and the site owner inherited the choice along with everything else in the template.

As of September 2026 we see it on 2,363,254 sites, filed under JavaScript libraries, with United States contributing 721,313 and .com carrying much of the volume. The commercially interesting inference is not about JavaScript at all. A site that installs an image overlay is a site with images worth enlarging, which in practice means a catalogue, a portfolio, a property listing, a restaurant menu, a gallery, or product photography. Presence is a weak signal about how a front end was engineered and a reasonably strong signal about what kind of business sits behind the page.

Image hosting and optimization vendors, digital asset management platforms, print and photography services, and marketplaces sourcing catalogue inventory all want the same population and rarely have a clean way to enumerate it. Filtering by industry classification misses the small operators, who are the bulk of the market and are usually described in a company register by something unrelated to what they publish. Filtering by a gallery script finds sites that demonstrably put images at the center of a page, regardless of how they describe themselves anywhere else.

A per-domain lookup cannot support that reasoning, because the inference only appears in aggregate. One site with an overlay tells you nothing you would act on. The whole population, joined against country, domain suffix, shop platform, and content management system inside the same export, tells you where image-heavy commerce lives, how it is built, and how large a segment is before anybody commits a budget to reaching it. Aggregation is also what lets a researcher separate the deliberate galleries from the theme defaults, by looking at what else the site runs.

The caveats follow from the naming problem. Forks and repackaged copies are common and not all of them stay recognizable, so the count understates the pattern considerably rather than marginally. We hold no version for most installs, because the file is usually minified into a theme bundle where its header comment does not survive. A site can also carry the script on a template it no longer uses, which means presence proves the code is being served and not that any visitor has ever triggered an overlay.
