About Project Wonderful

An ad slot outlives the deal that filled it. Publishers paste a snippet into a template once, and the snippet survives redesigns, platform changes and the end of the commercial relationship it was meant to serve. Anyone reading an advertising detection needs that fact first, because what a crawler finds is markup, not money.

Project Wonderful was an advertising network aimed at independent publishers, launched in 2006. License is recorded as Proprietary, meaning a hosted service publishers embedded rather than software anyone could install. The people who ran ads through it were webcomic authors, small blogs, hobby forums and independent creators, a constituency most ad tech was never built for. Bidding worked on time on a page rather than on impressions or clicks, a model that suited sites with loyal but modest traffic and no appetite for the machinery larger networks required.

As of October 2026 the code still resolves on 42 sites. A number of that size, for a network serving a niche community, deserves careful reading. Some of those pages are archives nobody has edited in years, some are personal sites kept online out of affection for the work on them, and some are simply templates that were never cleaned up. Detection is accurate about the markup and says nothing about whether an advertisement reached the last visitor.

The distinction is exactly why an entry like this belongs in a dataset rather than in a lookup. A stale ad tag is a fingerprint for abandonment. A site carrying one is a site whose front end has not been substantially revised since the tag was current, which makes the population useful for anyone studying web decay, anyone measuring how long dead code survives on the public internet, and anyone trying to date a site's last real update without trusting the copyright line in the footer.

The other reason to hold the whole list is community mapping.
