About Microsoft Advertising

Almost nobody picks Microsoft Advertising the way they pick a framework or a CMS. The tag arrives on a page because someone in marketing opened an account, funded a campaign, and pasted a Universal Event Tracking snippet into the template so that conversions could be attributed back to paid search. Presence is evidence of spend rather than evidence of engineering, and the Advertising category has to be read differently from the rest of a technology profile for exactly that reason.

What follows from a paid-media tag is a fairly specific portrait of the site behind it. Someone is buying clicks, which means there is something to sell and a conversion event worth measuring. Advertisers also tend to add the Microsoft network alongside an existing search program rather than instead of one, so the snippet usually lands on a site that already runs a broader marketing stack, a consent layer, and some form of analytics. Microsoft has operated the platform as a Proprietary product under several names since our record for it begins in 2006. The client-side part is ordinary JavaScript, which is the only reason a passive scan can see any of this from the outside.

United States accounts for 239,621 of them, and the domain mix leans toward .com, which is roughly what a search network anchored in one home market looks like when you view it from the outside. The concentration matters for anyone sizing a market, because a tag count is not evenly spread across the countries where the ad platform actually sells.

A per-domain lookup answers a question you usually already know the answer to. The downloadable list answers population questions instead. Which merchants on a given ecommerce platform buy search advertising at all. Which sites carry a Microsoft tag and no Google one, or the reverse, which is the channel gap an agency builds a pitch around. How large the addressable market is for a bid management tool, a feed manager, or a conversion API integration. How advertising tooling clusters by country, suffix, and sector once you can group hundreds of thousands of sites rather than sampling a handful. None of that is reachable by checking domains one at a time.

Two limits deserve stating plainly. Tracking tags outlive the campaigns that justified them, so a detection means the site ran Microsoft ads at some point and never removed the code, which is not the same as active spend today. Anyone using the list for outreach should treat it as a list of advertisers rather than a list of live budgets. The second limit runs the other way. When the tag is delivered through a container in a tag manager instead of being written into the page source, a passive scan can miss it entirely, so the count published here behaves as a floor rather than a census. Both effects are structural, they apply to every advertising tag we track, and neither is fixable by looking harder at an individual page.
