An advertising tag is one of the few things on a web page that says something about money rather than about engineering. Sovrn sits in the Advertising category, and finding it in a page's source means the operator has chosen to sell inventory through an exchange instead of selling it directly, running a subscription, or carrying no advertising at all. For anyone mapping the commercial side of the web, that decision is more informative than the content management system underneath it.

The dataset answers the inverse question, and the inverse question is the hard one: given the technology, produce every domain that carries it, with the fields you need to segment the result. Because the checks re-run continuously, the same list also supports a difference view over time, showing which publishers picked the tag up and which dropped it. Adoption and churn in an advertising category are usually the signal people were looking for in the first place.
