About PostHog
Analytics choices reveal how a company is organised. Marketing teams buy one kind of tool and engineering teams buy another, and PostHog is firmly the second kind: event tracking, session replay, feature flags and experiments, installed by whoever ships the product rather than by whoever runs the campaigns.
The project appeared in 2020, which makes it young next to most of the analytics stack on the web, and it grew out of a developer community rather than a marketing one. The backend is written in Python and the code carries an MIT licence, so a team can run the whole platform on its own servers and keep raw event data inside its own infrastructure. PostHog Inc. sells a hosted version alongside the open code. A dual arrangement like that is why a domain running the tool deserves a second look, because the operator made a deliberate choice about where user data lives, and that choice says something about their privacy posture, their regulatory environment and the seniority of their engineering.
Detection undercounts more than usual here, and the reason is built into the product. Self-hosted installations serve the script from the customer's own domain, and even hosted users are encouraged to proxy the snippet through their own path so it survives tracker blocking. Each of those patterns hides the tool from a signature that looks for vendor hostnames.
