Entries in the WordPress themes category usually name a company behind the software. Our record names OceanWP in that slot, while the theme as it is distributed today carries the project's own name in its author field, alongside a documentation site, a published support address and a paid extensions catalogue. Anyone planning to build a client site on it, or planning to sell into the sites already built on it, should establish who is maintaining it now before anything else.

A theme designed for compatibility with several page builders rather than around a design of its own attracts a particular buyer. Sites carrying it are usually sites where somebody wanted a neutral, fast foundation and intended to do the layout somewhere else, in a builder or in the block editor, which is how freelancers, small agencies and confident owners work when the design is not the theme's job. The version record needs a caveat rather than a boast. We hold 4,553 distinct version strings against the population, with sites clustering on 4.2.3, and a spread that wide for one theme is not a spread of releases the maintainer published. Child themes carry their own numbers, caches and optimisers serve stale asset strings, and hosts and agencies fork themes and renumber them for their own reasons. The figure is a ceiling on what we saw in delivered pages, not a changelog.

Version lag on a theme still has a practical reading, and it differs from lag in a plugin. A theme is the part of a WordPress site that is hardest to update safely, because customisation accumulates inside it and an update is the event that breaks a layout, so sites sitting on old theme releases are disproportionately sites with unmanaged customisation and nobody on retainer. For a maintenance or security business that is a qualified lead rather than a cold one. For a competing theme or a host it is a migration target with a known reason to move. For a plugin vendor the theme is a compatibility surface worth supporting or ignoring depending on how much of it exists. Every one of those questions is about a population, not a domain, which is the whole reason to hold the list rather than check sites one at a time.
