About Hetzner

Hosting is the one technology on a site that the owner may never have thought about. Hetzner is a case where they almost certainly did. The company sells dedicated servers, cloud instances and colocation at prices that reward people willing to administer their own machines, and nothing about the product hides that requirement from the buyer.

Hetzner Online GmbH has been operating since 1997 out of Germany, with data centres there and in Finland and a newer cloud footprint further afield. The customer profile follows from the pricing. Managed hosting sells convenience and charges for it, while this end of the market sells capacity and expects the buyer to bring their own operations, which is why the sites found here skew toward developers, agencies running their own stacks, self hosted software and infrastructure that was deliberately placed rather than defaulted into.

As of September 2026 we place 326,956 sites on this network, 244,850 of them served from Germany, and the .de suffix runs strongly through the file. The alignment between the serving country and the suffix is the useful part rather than either number alone. A national suffix on national infrastructure is a fair signal of a business trading in that market, whereas a hosting footprint scattered across many suffixes usually points to a reseller or an international customer base sitting behind one account.

A list of sites on a single hosting network answers questions no per domain lookup reaches. Competing hosts use it to size a migration target. Security researchers use it to map exposure across a shared network. Vendors selling monitoring, backup, managed services or compliance tooling use it because a self managed server implies gaps that a managed platform would have covered already. The common thread is that all of them need the population rather than a sample, and the population only exists as a file you can download and filter.

Two caveats belong on this one. Hosting attribution comes from network ownership, which tells you where a site is served from and not who owns the domain, so a single agency reselling space to its clients produces many rows that all trace back to one relationship. And a site sitting behind a CDN or a reverse proxy can be served from this network while presenting an address that belongs to somebody else, which pushes our count down rather than up.

There is no software version to filter on here, because a hosting provider is a place rather than a product. Country, suffix and whatever else the site runs alongside it are the filters that do the work.
