About LiveIntent

Advertising tags are the part of a website that visitors are never meant to notice and that the site's own editors rarely control. LiveIntent belongs to that layer. The tag is placed by whoever handles monetisation, it exists to resolve an audience rather than to render anything, and it says far more about the commercial arrangement behind a page than about the page itself.

The specific arrangement here is email-based identity. The model treats a hashed email address as a durable identifier that follows a reader between an inbox and a browser, which is a different bet from the cookie-based tracking that dominated display advertising for years. A publisher who deploys it has an email audience worth monetising and a newsletter operation to match. That is a narrow and quite recognisable kind of business, and it is not the same population as general programmatic display.

As of September 2026 we detect LiveIntent on 580 sites in the Advertising category. A count in that range is not a mass-market footprint and should not be read as one. Technology in this segment is sold to publishers and networks rather than to individual site owners, so detections concentrate among media properties, and a single commercial relationship can account for a cluster of domains at once. Anyone using the list for prospecting should expect to find groups sharing an intermediary rather than independent buyers.

LiveIntent, Inc. has run the platform since 2009 under a Proprietary licence, and the company was later absorbed into a larger marketing group, which is the normal end state for independent identity vendors. Consolidation is part of why deployed footprint is worth measuring directly rather than inferring from announcements. Tags outlive the companies that issued them, and a pixel still firing on a publisher's pages long after a merger is evidence of an integration nobody has revisited.

Detection is straightforward in principle and limited in practice. We find the tag where it is embedded in the page a crawler receives. Tags loaded through a tag manager, injected only for certain audiences or geographies, or present in the email newsletter but not on the website will not appear in our figures, and the newsletter case matters here because email is the channel the product was built for. Our count therefore describes web-visible deployment only.

The webatla export lists every domain where the tag was seen, alongside every other technology fingerprinted on the same site. For advertising technology that combination is the whole point, because the useful question is almost never which sites carry one tag. The useful question is which other tags they carry with it and where a competing product could displace an incumbent, and stack questions like that are answered by filtering a full population locally rather than by asking a lookup service about domains you already knew.
