About Jetpack

A self-hosted WordPress install exists because somebody wanted the site on their own server. Installing Jetpack hands a good part of it straight back. Statistics, image acceleration, backups, spam filtering and social publishing stop being local code and become servers operated by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. A researcher who finds the plugin on a domain has learned less about the machine than about the person paying for the machine.

Two things follow. The first is structural. The plugin does not run outside WordPress, so every detection is also a WordPress detection, and a filtered list of these domains is a list of WordPress sites with an extra property attached. The second is behavioural. An operator who reaches for a bundled subscription is usually not the operator who assembles a bespoke stack. Small businesses, clubs, local publishers and the agencies that look after them are heavily represented, and the site is more likely to be maintained by someone whose job is the business rather than the website.

There is a third consequence, and it is the one that makes the plugin interesting to anyone studying the web rather than selling to it. A site running it routes some of its traffic, its images and its statistics through infrastructure it does not control, so the plugin quietly converts a distributed population of independent installs into something closer to a managed fleet. Counting that fleet is counting how much of the self-hosted web has voluntarily re-attached itself to a central service.

As of September 2026 we detect Jetpack on 900,272 sites. United States contributes 545,706 of them, and the domain ending we record against it most often is .com. Released in 2011 and distributed under GPL v2, the plugin has had long enough to accumulate installs that outlived the projects they were added to.

The count deserves a caveat that a per-domain lookup tool never has to offer you. The plugin is modular, and an owner can enable only the parts that leave no public trace. Detection relies on visible signatures such as the statistics pixel, the image service hostnames and the plugin's own asset paths, so a site running it purely for backups is invisible to us and the installed base is larger than the number above. The error runs the other way as well, because some hosting companies preinstall the plugin, which means presence is not always an active choice by the site owner.

The reason to download the list rather than check domains one at a time is that the interesting questions are population questions. How many WordPress sites in a given country carry the plugin, whether it clusters on particular hosts, which segments have already shown they will pay for managed add-ons, and which of your own customers or prospects sit inside that group. A lookup answers the first of those and none of the rest. Our export gives one row per domain with the detected stack beside it, so it joins directly against a CRM list or a domain file you already hold, and successive snapshots show arrivals and departures instead of one frozen answer.
