About Flarum

Flarum is filed under Message boards because that is the closest fit our taxonomy offers, but Flarum is forum software, and a forum is a different kind of property from a marketing site. A forum is owned by a community manager rather than a marketing team, it fills up with content written by other people, and its operator worries about moderation, spam and search visibility instead of conversion rate.

The way Flarum is built narrows the audience further. The backend is PHP and the interface is a JavaScript client that renders in the browser, released under MIT since 2014 and installed by hand rather than through a hosting panel. An operator who gets it running is comfortable with dependency management, server updates and a command line, which is a meaningfully different profile from someone who clicks install on a packaged forum product.

Community sites also spend differently from businesses. Money goes to hosting that can absorb traffic spikes, to moderation and anti-spam tooling, to search, to email delivery, and eventually to whatever pays for the community itself, which is usually memberships, donations or sponsorship rather than advertising. Vendors in those categories rarely have a good way to find such sites, because a forum is not classified by industry and does not describe itself in a business directory.
