About Amazon ELB

A load balancer is not chosen the way a theme or an analytics tag is chosen. Something sits in front of the application because an engineering team made a decision about how traffic should be spread across servers and what should happen when one of them stops answering. Reading Amazon ELB off a domain therefore says more about the organisation behind the site than about the site itself.

Amazon launched the service in 2009 and has kept it a Proprietary product available only inside Amazon Web Services. The constraint is what makes the signal worth collecting, because the balancer cannot be self hosted, cannot be resold by a third party, and cannot appear in front of a site that is not already running on AWS. A domain where we detect it is a domain whose production traffic terminates in Amazon's cloud, which is a far stronger statement than a generic hosting guess.

As of September 2026 the Load balancers footprint we record covers 463,321 sites, of which 332,941 belong to registrants in United States, and the .com zone carries much of that volume. American weighting is expected for an American cloud vendor selling into an American software industry, but the tail is where the research value sits. A team working in a smaller market is dealing with a far thinner pool of AWS anchored domains, and a thin pool has to be enumerated completely rather than sampled.

Detection here is inferential and it undercounts. A load balancer announces itself through response headers, through DNS records pointing at Amazon managed hostnames, and through the error pages it generates when a backend is unhealthy. Sites that place a CDN or their own reverse proxy in front of the balancer hide all of that from the outside, so a domain can be served by Amazon infrastructure and still be absent from our list. The figure should be read as a floor and never as a census.

The question a downloadable list answers is not whether a particular company uses Amazon for load balancing. A per domain lookup settles that in seconds and costs nothing. What a lookup cannot produce is the population: every domain in a country, a vertical or a top level domain showing the same infrastructure, arranged so that a market can be sized, so that hosting resellers who standardise on the platform become visible as a cluster, and so that accounts a competing cloud has not yet reached can be separated from the ones it has. Cloud sales teams, migration consultancies, security researchers looking for origins exposed behind a balancer, and analysts tracking where AWS is gaining or losing ground all need the set rather than the single answer.
