Azure Front Door is a fact about a company's contracts before it is a fact about a website. An edge service that terminates connections, routes them over a global network, applies a firewall and hands traffic to an origin is not selected by whoever writes the pages. The service arrives with a cloud commitment, and the decision is normally taken once, at the level of a platform team or a procurement cycle, then applied across everything the organisation runs.

Which is what makes the signal worth extracting. A domain served through it belongs to an organisation that has already standardised on Microsoft's cloud, is paying at a level where a global delivery tier makes sense, and probably runs identity, hosting and storage from the same account. For anyone selling into that estate, or selling an alternative to it, the list reads as a map of accounts rather than a map of websites, and a single account often stands behind many of the domains in it.

The service reached general availability in 2019, which is late compared with the delivery networks it competes against, so its install base skews toward organisations that adopted it as part of a broader migration rather than picking it on its own merits. The platform is Proprietary and exposes no version string. What sits in front of a site is whatever the vendor is running that day, which is normally an argument in the service's favour and a hard limit on what any dataset can say about it.

As of September 2026 we see Azure Front Door in front of 94,949 sites, 65,995 of them in United States, with registrations concentrated under .com. Country in this context reflects where the domain's organisation appears to sit rather than where the traffic is served from, because an anycast edge answers from everywhere by design. Anyone reading a geography column for a delivery network should hold on to that distinction.

Detection at the edge is detection of the layer nearest the visitor and nothing more. A site behind the service may run any stack at all underneath, and a second proxy placed in front will hide the service entirely, so the published count is a floor and it is silent about origins.
