About AdRoll

A retargeting pixel is an unusually honest signal, because nobody installs one by accident. AdRoll exists to recognize a visitor after the visit and place advertising in front of that person somewhere else, which is only worth paying for when a site is already buying traffic in the first place. Finding the tag on a domain says less about the technology stack than about the budget behind it: someone at that company has media spend, a target for return on it, and a reason to care about visitors who left without buying.

AdRoll is a hosted commercial product, licensed as Proprietary and operated by AdRoll, which is why there is no version string to record and no self-hosted variant to look for. Either the tag is in the delivered page or it is not. The company has been selling into this market since 2007, long enough that its customer base leans toward retail brands with an established paid acquisition habit rather than toward experiments, and long enough that a detection often marks a relationship years old.

Within the Advertising category the tag belongs to the performance end rather than the brand end. Presence usually implies a storefront, a marketer or small agency running campaigns directly, and a stack that also contains an analytics tag, a consent banner and a checkout the pixel is meant to attribute against. Absence, on a site that clearly sells things, is informative in the other direction, because it suggests acquisition is happening somewhere other than paid display.

Two limits are worth stating. Tags outlive the campaigns that justified them, so a share of what we see is residue left in a template after the contract lapsed, and a consent layer that blocks the script before it loads can hide a live installation from us entirely. A detection is evidence that the tag is present in the page we fetched, not proof that money is currently moving through it.

As of September 2026 we record the tag on 859 sites, and the value of holding all of them in one file is that a per-domain lookup can only confirm what you already suspected about a domain you already knew. Agencies pitching retargeting work use the list to build a territory. Competing platforms use it as a displacement target, filtered by country or top-level domain. Researchers studying tracker prevalence use it to measure how one vendor's reach is distributed across the open web rather than sampled from whichever sites they happened to visit.
