About Astro

A framework this young poses a different research question from an established one. Nobody needs convincing that Astro exists. What matters commercially is how fast the population is moving, which kinds of sites are choosing it, and how quickly deployments follow new releases.

Astro is a JavaScript frameworks published under the MIT license and written in JavaScript, with its first public release in 2021. The framework builds pages ahead of time and ships interactive code only where a page genuinely needs it, so the typical site built with it is a content property: documentation, a publication, a marketing site, a storefront front end. Sites in that group tend to be recently built or recently rebuilt, which is a useful qualifier on its own for anyone selling tooling, hosting or agency work.

Detection here is genuinely inferential, more so than for a server side platform, and the reason is structural. The whole purpose of the framework is to emit ordinary static markup and to avoid shipping a runtime, so a carefully tuned site can leave very little evidence behind. We match on the build artefacts it produces, on the naming conventions of the assets it generates and on the markers left around interactive components. A site with no interactive components at all, served through an aggressive edge cache, can be effectively invisible to us. The count should be read as a lower bound, and the movement in that lower bound between releases of the data is more informative than the absolute figure.

Version information is available and unusually meaningful. We hold 565 distinct version strings, and the release we record most often is 5.18.2. Churn is high for a project of this age, which has commercial consequences: an integration author, a component library maintainer or an agency needs to know not only that a site uses the framework but roughly which generation, because breaking changes between major lines decide whether an integration works at all. Filtering the list by version separates sites that track releases closely from sites that shipped once and stopped, and those two groups behave differently as customers.

As of September 2026 we detect the framework on 363,325 sites, 293,050 of them in United States, with .com carrying the largest group of suffixes. Concentration of that kind is normal for a developer led project that spreads through English language documentation, conference talks and open source repositories long before it reaches procurement processes in other markets.

A per domain lookup answers whether one site was built with the framework, which is rarely the question anyone actually has. The export answers the inverse: every site we can see using it, with the domain, the country, the suffix, the version where one was exposed and the detection date. Adoption curves, competitive sizing, prospect lists and upgrade research all need the population rather than a single confirmation.
