About Xajax

Finding Xajax on a site that is still online is a dating technique as much as a technology detection. The library was released in 2005, during the short window when adding asynchronous requests to a PHP application meant writing the request plumbing by hand. The library did that plumbing for you, exposing server-side functions to the browser so a page could update without a reload, at a time when that was genuinely difficult.

What its presence implies now is a page whose interactive parts were written in that era and have not been rewritten since. The inference is not that the site is abandoned. Plenty of the pages we find are maintained, updated with fresh content, and commercially active. What has not changed is the layer underneath, either because a custom admin panel still depends on it or because a content system bundled it years ago and nobody had a reason to rip it out.

The distribution model explains why it lingers. Because the library is LGPL and shipped as a folder of PHP files rather than through a package registry, it travelled by being copied into projects. Copies do not get upgraded centrally, no vendor pushes a patch, and there is no account anywhere recording who installed it. Our own record reflects that. Webatla holds no vendor for it and no usable version breakdown, which is exactly what code distributed by copying looks like from the outside.
