About WysiBB
Some entries in a technology dataset are archaeology, and WysiBB is one of them. The library is an in page editor from the era when online communities ran on forum packages and posts were composed in the bracketed markup those packages understood rather than in HTML.
The facts we hold are few. The library is MIT licensed and written in JavaScript, the earliest release we can date is 2012, and no vendor is recorded, which is normal for a small open source component maintained by an individual rather than a company. As of October 2026 we still detect it on 100 sites.
Longevity is the point of interest. A forum editor is not a component anyone adds to a new project, so the population consists almost entirely of sites that were built once and left running. Presence of the library is therefore a usable proxy for age. A domain carrying it is likely to be running dated server software, an unmaintained forum package, and a set of other front end dependencies of the same vintage, none of which have been reviewed since installation.
The audience for a list like that is specific. Security researchers use aging client side components to locate populations that were never patched. Hosting and migration vendors use them to find site owners who will eventually be forced to move. Anyone studying the decline of the independent forum as a format needs some way to count what remains, and a fingerprint of the editor those forums shipped is a workable measure when the forums themselves are too varied to enumerate directly.
The limits are the ordinary ones for small libraries. A copy that has been renamed, bundled into another file, or edited by hand loses the signature we match on, and community sites that sit entirely behind a login expose nothing for a crawler to read, so the surviving install base is certainly larger than the figure we publish. The value of the export is not the total. The value is being able to enumerate the survivors, see what software they run beside, and watch the count fall from one release to the next.
