About FancyBox

A dependency installed once and then forgotten leaves a very particular trace. Our index resolves 1,163 distinct version strings for FancyBox, a spread no release schedule could produce on its own. The explanation is that the library rarely arrives on a site as a decision. Themes bundle it, plugins bundle it, page builders bundle it, and each of them pins, patches or renames a slightly different copy, which is why the version column here reads like sediment rather than like a changelog.

As of September 2026 we see it on 1,108,393 sites, filed under JavaScript libraries. One build recurs across a large part of that population, namely 2.1.5, a release from the era when the library was a jQuery plugin rather than a standalone component, and the age of the build dates the layer it is sitting in. A site carrying it is not necessarily neglected, but the template around it has almost certainly not been rebuilt since that build was current. For anyone selling redesigns, migrations or performance work, an old lightbox is a cheap and reliable proxy for an old front end.

Distribution is under GPL v3, which is the fact behind a good deal of quiet non compliance on the commercial web, because a copyleft licence attached to a bundled interface component is not something most site owners know they have accepted. Detection is straightforward when the file arrives with its own name and header comment intact, and unreliable when it has been concatenated into a bundle, minified with everything else, or renamed by a build step. Our count is therefore conservative. Sites that inlined the library into a single application bundle are largely invisible to us, and those tend to be the more modern sites, which pushes our sample further towards the older web than the real distribution sits.

Russia accounts for 293,949 of the detections, a concentration worth explaining rather than simply repeating. Country in our data follows the domain and its infrastructure, and a library that travels inside themes will follow whichever theme ecosystems are locally popular. A regional publishing market served by a handful of widely used template vendors can spread one bundled copy of a lightbox across an entire national web. Extensions cluster on .com, which adds little beyond confirming these are ordinary commercial and personal sites rather than institutional ones. The library first appeared in 2008, and what we see now is largely the residue of its first decade of copying.

None of this is answerable one domain at a time. Whether a single site loads a lightbox is a question with no commercial content. Which theme families propagated which build, how much of a country's web still sits on a pre rewrite release, or which hosting estates would break if a bundled copy were finally updated, are questions that need the whole population in a file with a version string attached to every row. Our export carries the domain, the detected version where one is exposed, the surrounding stack and the crawl date, so the same query run a month later shows you what actually moved rather than what you assumed had.
