About REG.RU

Detecting a hosting company is a different kind of finding from detecting a library, and the difference decides who the record is useful to. REG.RU is a domain registrar and hosting provider founded in 2006, recorded here as REG.RU on a Proprietary basis and filed under Hosting. When we attach the company to a site, we are not describing anything the site's developers chose to build with. We are describing who bills them, who answers for their DNS, and whose jurisdiction their infrastructure sits inside.

Sales teams at competing providers want migration targets, and a hosting column plus a domain suffix plus a country column is most of a qualified list already.

The attribution itself is inferential, and being blunt about that matters more than a confident total. We do not read invoices. Hosting is assigned from the signals a site exposes to the outside world: address ranges, nameserver delegation, mail routing, control panel signatures, and default pages left in place during provisioning. Resellers blur every one of those signals, because a reseller's customers can sit on the provider's network while presenting the reseller's branding, and large customers who bring their own address space can vanish from the provider's visible footprint entirely. The number moves when a provider renumbers a range, which is an artifact of measurement rather than a change in the business.

A per-domain lookup answers whether a single site is hosted somewhere, which is a question with a one-word answer and almost no leverage behind it. The downloadable list answers the questions that only exist in aggregate: how large the footprint is, how it splits across domain suffixes and countries, which shop platforms and content management systems the customer base actually runs, and which slice of it looks worth approaching. Every one of those requires the whole population in a file you can group, filter, and join, not a form you can query one domain at a time.

The honest summary is that this record is a well-supported estimate with soft edges, not a customer list. Read as a footprint it holds up well, because the signals behind it are stable and the errors are mostly at the margins where resellers and self-hosted enterprise customers live. Read as a precise count of contracts it will disappoint anyone who checks it against the provider's own reporting. The first reading answers commercial and regulatory questions cleanly. The second one was never available from outside the company, from us or from anybody else measuring the web from the network side.
